WTT Contender Lagos: Adegoke Muizz remains only Nigerian in Men’s Singles as Olympic-bound Omotayo Olajide crashes out

Adegoke Muizz remains the only Nigerian player in the Men’s Singles event at the ongoing 2024 World Table Tennis (WTT) Contender Lagos after beating fellow Nigerian Amadi Omeh to reach the round of 16, as Paris Olympic-bound Olajide Omotayo crashed out.
Muizz defeated Amadi 3-2 (11-5, 9-11, 8-11, 11-4, 11-7) in their round of 32 tie to reach the last 16, where he will face South Korea’s Lim Jonghoon, who defeated Spain’s Rafael De Las Heras 3-1 (9-11, 8-11, 11-8, 9-11), for a place in the Men’s Singles event quarter-finals.
Meanwhile, the highest-ranked Nigerian in the Men’s Singles event, Omotayo, who has already qualified for the Paris Olympic Games, failed to progress past the round of 16. The 28-year-old was thrashed 3-0 by India’s Thakkar Manav Vikash, who will now face China’s Fei Junhang in the round of 16.
In the other round of 16 games, Germany’s Mengel Steffen, who defeated India’s Pal Akash 3-1, will face Denmark’s Lind Ander, who secured a comfortable 3-0 win over Ghana’s Yeboah Michael. Germany’s Walther Ricardo tango India’s Shah Manush Utpalbhai.
Germany’s Dimitrij Ovtcharov will face China’s Kang Youde, China’s Ning Xiankun will be paired against India’s Desai Harmeet, Indian legend Sharath Kamal Achanta is up against China’s Jiecheng, and France’s Poret Thibault will lock horns with India’s Sathiyan Gnanasekaran.
