Akionla Owolabi, general manager of Orisun FM, Oketase, Ile-Ife, Osun, has called on broadcast journalists to leverage their voices for positive societal change.

Mr Owolabi gave the charge in an interview on Wednesday in Ile-Ife to mark World Voice Day.

World Voice Day is observed annually on April 16.

Mr Owolabi noted that journalists generally are the voice for the voiceless and that the profession is a divine call which must be effectively utilised.

The general manager observed that not everyone could speak and that the voice would be heard or recognised in the society, and warned against abnormality in using voices.

Mr Owolabi explained that media houses serve as voice for the voiceless and fight for social justice by raising awareness generally on platforms for activism.

He urged all broadcasters to see themselves as occupying a divine position in society, saying many people look up to them.

Mr Owolabi commended the government for allowing the media to hold them accountable and paving the way for their coverage.

While noting that some developing countries do not allow social media operation, acknowledged the Nigerian government for allowing the operation of social media.

He called on the government to support media houses for more improvement and positive achievements.
