A woman was killed and more than a dozen people injured when Russia attacked the southern Ukrainian region of Mykolaiv with repurposed anti-aircraft missiles overnight, authorities said on Tuesday.

Russian forces launched seven S300 and S400 projectiles from the annexed Crimean Black Sea peninsula, the Ukrainian air force said.

Anti-aircraft weapons have a high hit rate against targets in the air.

When used against ground targets, they were considered inaccurate and prone to unpredictable outcomes.

The woman was killed in the regional capital, Mykolaiv, with 16 more injured in the attack, Governor Vitalii Kim said on Telegram.

He added that An unidentified infrastructure object and several buildings were damaged.

Mykolaiv, a port city on the Black Sea and a major shipbuilding centre avoided occupation at the beginning of the full-scale Russian invasion in the spring of 2022.

Operations in its seaport are at a standstill because the Russian army controls access to the Black Sea.

According to the Ukrainian air force, Russia also deployed 17 combat drones against Ukraine overnight, 12 of which were intercepted.

The defence ministry in Moscow reported that three Ukrainian drones were intercepted over Russian territory during the night.
