A 40-year-old woman, Chidinma Nwakama, on Thursday appeared before an Ojo Magistrates’ Court for allegedly obtaining N300,000 from a complainant under false pretences.

The defendant is standing trial before the magistrate, Lateef Layeni, on a two-count charge bordering on obtaining money by false pretence and stealing.

She, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The prosecutor, Simon Uche, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on September 23 in the Isashi area of Ojo.

He alleged that the defendant obtained the sum of N300,000 from one Anita Rawlings, with a promise to supply her five bags of rice.

The prosecution alleged that the defendant failed to supply the rice, which was false, but allegedly converted the money for her personal use.

He said the offences contravened the provisions of sections 287 and 315 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015.

The court granted the defendant bail in the sum of N200,000 with one surety in like sum, who must provide evidence of tax clearance.

He adjourned the case until November 17 for mention.
