Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, on Monday evening, said his government is in control of the situation and is studying the trend of violent attacks in the state.

This follows the killing of over 50 people by gunmen on Sunday night in Zikke village, Bassa Local Government Area.

Mr Mutfwang, in a statement, said he had convened a security council meeting in response to the attack.

“We have received detailed briefings from the heads of the various security agencies regarding the incident. We are working diligently to establish exactly what happened and why, so that we can respond appropriately and prevent such incidents in the future,” Mr Mutfwang said.

He added: “In the meantime, I want to reassure the people of Plateau State that we are firmly in control of the situation, and we will go to any length necessary to prevent a recurrence.”

Warning locals against reprisal, Mr Mutfwang said:  “We have engaged with the affected community, urging the people to remain calm and avoid any retaliatory actions that could further escalate tensions. We are grateful that the youths of the community listened to our appeal.”

Mr Mutfwang’s statement followed President Bola Tinubu’s condemnation of the ongoing wave of killings across Plateau communities. The president urged the governor to address the root causes of the lingering crisis in the state.

In a statement by Bayo Onanuga on Monday, Mr Tinubu condemned the Sunday night attack that left over 50 persons dead in Zikke village of Bassa LGA, Plateau State.
