A bill seeking to improve vehicle inspection and prevent motor accidents on the road, on Monday, passed a second reading at the Osun House of Assembly.

The bill entitled “Osun State Road Traffic and Vehicle Inspection Services Bill, 2024” was passed after its policy thrust was read by Abiola Ibrahim, representing the Irewole/Isokan constituency.

Mr Ibrahim, while reading the policy thrust, said the bill was aimed at regulating road traffic, inspecting vehicles for roadworthiness and enforcing traffic laws to prevent accidents and loss of property on the roads in the state.

He said the bill, when passed, would equally serve as a legal framework for vehicle inspection officers.

“It will ensure roadworthiness and regular vehicle inspection to certify that vehicles are safe for the road and stop accidents caused by faulty vehicles.

“When passed, it will also regulate government- and privately-owned driving schools in the state,” he said.

The lawmaker also said the bill had been passed into law in other states.

He said the bill would also help boost the state’s internally generated revenue through the collection of fines and levies.

Speaker of the assembly, Adewale Egbedun, aligned himself with the call by other lawmakers to give the bill an accelerated passage, saying it had many benefits.

Similarly, the State Startup Bill 2024, which was aimed at encouraging business startups in the state, also passed a second reading after the majority leader, Kofoworola Adewunmi, read its policy thrust.

The assembly, thereafter, adjourned sitting until Tuesday, April 29.
