The Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Shehu Mohammed, has warned motorists against drunk driving and speeding during Valentine’s Day celebrations.

The warning is contained in a statement on Friday in Abuja by the Corps Public Education Officer, Olusegun Ogungbemide.

Mr Mohammed cautioned drivers to resist reckless behaviour to reduce road traffic crashes during the celebrations.

He assured the public that operational and educational measures had been activated to safeguard road users throughout the Valentine’s Day period.

The corps marshal directed commanding officers nationwide to intensify efforts through massive deployment for enhanced visibility, traffic control and strict enforcement of regulations.

He ordered operatives to deploy breathalysers and radar guns to test suspected drunk drivers and prevent them from continuing their journeys.

“This is to prevent needless deaths, injuries and damage to property,” he said.

On the significance of the day, Mr Mohammed described Valentine’s Day as a global celebration of love and goodwill.

“It is a time to show care and exchange gifts, in memory of Saint Valentine who exemplified love while he lived,” he said.

He warned that any driver found violating traffic laws would face sanctions, adding that the corps would not spare offenders.

Mr Mohammed urged motorists to use the FRSC’s toll-free 122 emergency line to report crashes, obstructions or reckless driving.

He reminded celebrants to comply strictly with safety guidelines and cooperate with FRSC personnel deployed across the country.

“Our presence on the roads is for the safety of lives and property,” he said.

The corps marshal also urged parents and guardians to counsel their wards, noting that youths are often more vulnerable during festive periods.
