UNICEF, in partnership with the Bauchi State Agricultural Development Programme (BSADP), launched the School Gardening and Young Farmers Club initiative in secondary schools across the state on Monday.

Inaugurating the project at Government Girls College, Bauchi, the Commissioner for Education, Muhammad Rimin-Zayam, stated that the initiative would reduce dropout rates and encourage girls to stay in school and acquire life skills.

The commissioner stated that the project would be piloted in six schools to enhance nutrition, environmental awareness, practical experience, and agricultural education across the state.

Mr Rimin-Zayam added that the initiative seeks to equip students, especially girls, with essential agricultural skills, promote healthy eating habits, and instill environmental responsibility.

According to him, farming drives development, provides nutritious food, and generates income.

He, therefore, urged teachers and school authorities to fully back the initiative.

Also speaking, Ilyasu Gital, Commissioner for Agriculture, praised the partnership, noting that it would enhance agricultural practices and boost youth employment.

He pledged the government’s support through the provision of fertilisers and water supply to ensure the gardens’ long-term sustainability.

UNICEF’s Chief of Field Office in Bauchi, Nuzhat Rafique, described the project as part of UNICEF’s broader mandate to promote children’s rights in health, nutrition, education, and protection.

She highlighted that students would learn practical farming techniques, including vegetable cultivation, to enhance their well-being and empower their communities.

Ms Rafique urged all stakeholders to support the project, ensuring its lasting impact on education and livelihoods in the state.

To mark the launch, trees were planted within the school compound to promote environmental health.

The school gardening initiative represents a crucial step toward developing self-reliant, health-conscious, and environmentally responsible future leaders.
