UN offers aid to Libya as devastating floods kill 150 people

The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) on Monday expressed its willingness to support the country’s authorities in battling floods that have hit the eastern part.
The mission said it stood ready to provide urgent humanitarian assistance to complement national and local efforts to respond to the floods.
“The United Nations in Libya is closely following the emergency caused by severe weather conditions in the eastern region of the country,” UNSMIL said in a statement.
“We express our heartfelt condolences to the families of those who have lost their lives and our thoughts for all people affected,” it added.
After the Mediterranean storm Daniel made landfall in eastern Libya on Sunday, it caused flooding and destroyed facilities along its path.
The head of the Red Crescent in Benghazi said on Monday that 150 people were killed in Derna in the last two days, according to Reuters.
Libyan Prime Minister Abdul-Hamed Dbeibah on Sunday instructed relevant authorities to remain on high alert and take measures to deal with the storm, vowing to “protect the people and ease the damage of the floods and rain.”
