The United Arab Emirates has confirmed the attack on the residence of its ambassador in Khartoum by a Sudanese military aircraft.

In a statement, the UAE’s minister for security and military affairs, Salem Jaberi, said the attack caused extensive damage to the building housing the country’s ambassador.

Mr Jaberi said UAE invited the United Nations experts to review the damage caused by the attack, describing it as heinous.

He said, “The attack constitutes a blatant violation of the fundamental principle of diplomatic premises’ inviolability, along with international conventions and norms, particularly the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations. His Excellency stressed the existence of pictures and evidence that irrefutably prove the targeting of the ambassador’s residence, thereby undermining the false narrative promoted by the Sudanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs and its Armed Forces.’’.

The UAE noted that the Sudanese Armed Forces persistently attempted to evade legal and moral accountability for the ongoing humanitarian disaster in Sudan, resulting from this conflict.

The country added that the action was misleading the international community and diverting attention from the suffering of Sudanese while avoiding their obligations imposed by international efforts to end the conflict.

The Sudanese army denied the accusations, saying that the acts were being carried out by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces.

In April last year, war erupted between the Sudanese army and the RSF over a transition to free elections.

Then, the UN had claimed that nearly 25 million people – half Sudan’s population needed aid, adding that famine was looming and some eight million people had fled their homes.
