U.S. warns Americans of insecurity as France prepares for weekend protests
The U.S. embassy in France has warned American citizens to avoid demonstrations and areas of unrest over planned protests and recent violence in parts of the country.
In a security alert on Thursday, the embassy said protests were planned for Saturday and Sunday and warned that demonstrations could turn violent and disrupt movement.
“Stay away from areas with large crowds or significant police activity. Numerous groups submitted plans for protests on Saturday, October 24.
“Americans in Paris for the NFL game on Sunday, October 25 should also exercise caution and be aware of their surroundings,” the statement read.
It stated that permits may be filed for demonstration routes, last-minute changes can happen, and protests can occur outside planned routes, adding that recent demonstrations were violent and involved heavy property destruction, uncontrolled looting, and attacks on police.
“Police responded with crowd control methods including tear gas. The State Department updated its Travel Advisory on October 21 to note these developments,” it said.
The embassy explained that in Orléans, media reported significant marches and protests planned for Saturday and Sunday.
“Curfews in parts of France, including some neighbourhoods in Paris and the vicinity, might continue,” it said.
It added that curfews were decided locally and could be imposed at short notice, restricting gatherings and movement around certain public landmarks.
