U.S. returns to top in FIFA women’s world ranking

The United States women’s national team reclaimed the top spot in FIFA’s world rankings on Friday, twelve months after being ousted from the same position.
Last weekend, the American team won the gold medal at the Paris Olympics after Mallory Swanson helped it win its fifth gold medal at the 2024 Olympics.
This was their first gold medal win since the 2012 London Games, achieved by beating Brazil 1-0 in the final.
England climbed one spot to the second position at the expense of Spain, now third, after seeing their bid for Olympic glory end with defeat to Brazil in the semi-finals.
Meanwhile, Germany has held on to its position as fourth in the ranking.
Brazil climbed one spot to eighth, while France, which was second in the most recent count, has fallen eight places, now residing in 10th position.
This comes after the country topped Group A3 of the 2025 Euros qualifiers ahead of England, Sweden, and the Republic of Ireland but failed to make it past the quarter-finals of the Olympic tournament.
Despite boasting a strong squad, France is yet to win a major piece of silverware and is now without head coach Hervé Renard, who announced his departure following the premature Olympics exit.
