U.S. finds new lead on Nord Stream attack investigation

United States officials have found a lead that will take the international community closer to determining who is responsible for the attack on Russia’s Nord Stream pipelines which transports gas to Europe.
According to officials who spoke with The New York Times, their intelligence points to a pro-Ukrainian group being responsible for the gas pipes’ explosion.
To leave open the potential that the operation was carried out covertly by a proxy force with ties to the Ukrainian government or its security agencies, they emphasised that nothing was known about the group or its supporters.
Although there is disagreement among U.S. officials who have been briefed on the intelligence over how much importance to accord the fresh information, according to U.S. officials, the latest intelligence reports have raised their confidence that American spy agencies and their European colleagues can uncover more information that may help them identify the offenders with certainty. The duration of such process is not yet known.
In September 2022, explosions severely damaged undersea pipelines built to carry natural gas from Russia to Europe.
Many world leaders blamed Moscow for what they termed a “dangerous act of sabotage.”
