Two teenagers bag six-month jail for stealing phone

A Grade One Area Court in Lugbe, Abuja, on Thursday sentenced Elijah Joseph, 17 and Safiyanu Bashiru, 16, to six months imprisonment for stealing cell phone from a shop.
The judge, Malam Aliyu Kagarko, sentenced the convict, after pleading guilty to the charges against them.
Mr Kagarko, however, gave them an option of N25,000 fine or serve six months jail term, adding that a compensation of N50,000 must be paid to the complainant.
The convicts are charged with theft and receiving stolen property.
The prosecuting counsel, Mr Olisa-Emeka Okeke, had earlier told the court that Joseph trespassed into the shop of Ibrahim Saiabu in Kubusa Market and stole his customer’s cell phone valued at N50,000.
He said that during police investigation, Joseph admitted to the crime, adding that he sold the cell phone to Bashiru.
The prosecutor said that the offence contravened Sections 387 and 312 of the Penal Code.
