Two killed as gunmen attack police, vigilante facilities in Anambra

A police and vigilante facility in Abagana, Njikoka Local Government Area of Anambra State, was yesterday attacked by gunmen, leaving two vigilante operatives dead.
The command spokesman, Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the attack in a statement to Peoples Gazette on Saturday.
“The gunmen had earlier attacked Anambra State vigilante operatives on patrol along Abagana road, murdered two of their operatives, and on approaching Abagana Police Station, started shooting sporadically to gain entrance to the Police Station,” Mr Ikenga said
The spokesman said that police officers stood their ground and were able to stop the gunmen from entering the station.
“The police operatives engaged the armed men in a gun duel, due to the superior fire of the police and in a bid for the gunmen to flee the scene, they threw a petrol bomb into the station, which ignited the fire and affected the roof of an old building in the station. The fire service operatives responded swiftly and put off the fire,” he added
He noted that investigations are still ongoing and patrols have intensified in the area and within the state.
The Gazette reported yesterday a similar attack on an anti-cult formation in the state, which led to the death of a policeman.
