Tuition Hike: Ambrose Alli University suspends academic activities indefinitely over protest

The management of the Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, Edo State, has suspended all academic activities indefinitely with immediate effect.
The acting registrar of the institution, Ambrose Odiase, said in a statement on Tuesday that the decision followed the continued protest by students.
Mr Odiase said the institution’s senate had held an emergency meeting to prevent the protest from escalating into a complete breakdown of law and order.
He said, “In order to prevent a total breakdown of law and order, as well as the need to guarantee the safety of lives and property in the university community and its environs, Senate was left with no other choice but to direct an immediate suspension of academic activities.
“All students residing in the hostels on campus are to vacate the halls of residence without fail within the next 24 hours. “
Students of the institution have been protesting the hike in school fees for returning students.
The protests have disrupted academic and other activities in the institution, resulting in the dissolution of the students’ union executive.
