Travel agent in court over alleged N6.5 million U.S. visa fraud

A travel agent, Segun Ayobami, 39, was on Wednesday, arraigned in an Iyaganku Magistrates’ Court, Ibadan, Oyo State, over alleged U.S. visa fraud.
Ayobami, whose address was not provided, was charged with obtaining money under false pretences, stealing and forgery of a conference document.
He, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The Prosecutor, ASP Anthony Igori, told the court that the defendant committed the offences on Dec. 1, 2024, at about 12.30p.m, at Ologuneru area of Ibadan.
Mr Igori alleged that the defendant fraudulently obtained the sum of N6,400,000 from Sorinola Abimbola, under the pretext of getting him and his family a U.S. visa but failed to do so.
He alleged that the defendant converted the money to his personal use and forged a conference document for Abimbola to attend a conference interview.
Igori said the offences contravened Sections 419, 390(9) and 473(1) of the Criminal Laws of Oyo State, 2000.
The Magistrate, Grace Daodu, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N2 million and two sureties in like sum.
Daodu said that the sureties must be gainfully employed and domiciled within the jurisdiction of the court.
She adjourned the case until August 14 for hearing.
