The police, on Tuesday, arraigned a 35-year-old woman, Bosede Falodun, before an Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrates’ Court over alleged assault on environmental officers.

The defendant, of no fixed address, is standing trial on a three-count charge of assault, unlawful damage and breach of peace.

The prosecutor, Inspector Akinwale Oriyomi, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on Thursday at about 11:00 a.m at Bisi market in Ado-Ekiti.

He alleged that the defendant assaulted three officers from the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources while they were performing their lawful duty.

Mr Oriyomi said that the defendant allegedly damaged the service uniform of one of the officers, Fatomoye Abiodun, valued at N6,000.

He also alleged that the defendant conducted herself in a manner likely to cause the breach of peace.

The prosecutor alleged that the defendant, a cow skin seller popularly known as Ponmo, had displayed her goods by the roadside.

“When instructed to pack up her goods, she assaulted the officers in the process,” he told the court.

According to him, the offence contravenes Sections 354, 354 and 181(d) of the Criminal Law of Ekiti State, 2021.

He urged the court to adjourn the case to enable him study the file and assemble his witnesses.

The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Counsel to the defendant, Joy Raphael, urged the court to grant the defendant bail, with a promise that she would not jump bail.

The Chief Magistrate, Abayomi Adeosun, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N10,000 with one surety in like sum.

He adjourned the case till April 17 for hearing.
