The Methodist archbishop of Enugu Diocese, Christopher Edeh, has urged governments at all levels to prioritise justice and good governance in nation-building.

Mr Edeh made the call during a press conference as part of the activities to mark the 50th Anniversary of the Methodist Archdiocese of Enugu on Saturday in Enugu.

The archbishop said this had become necessary to ensure that equity, transparency, and the rule of law guide the nation’s leadership.

According to him, the South-East region and the nation have continued to suffer from kidnappings, violent extremism, and socio-political unrest.

“As a church with deep historical roots and widespread influence across the South-East, we use this moment to urge the government of Nigeria and the South-Eastern states to prioritise the security of lives and property.

“We also call for a coordinated, ethical, and community-engaging approach to national security.

“Let equity, transparency, and the rule of law guide your leadership. A nation that neglects justice invites instability,” Mr Edeh said.

The bishop equally urged state and federal governments to commit to quality education and skills training that would empower youths to become solution-bearers, not victims of economic hopelessness.

On the issue of religious freedom, the clergyman emphasised that every faith community should worship without fear, advocating for increased protection of places of worship and support for interfaith harmony.

“We encourage sustained investments in roads, power, rail, and agricultural processing facilities across the South-East to curb youth migration and promote economic self-reliance.

“The Methodist Church Nigeria stands ready to partner with governments in moral advocacy, community development, peace building, and leadership ethics.

“We are not only preachers of salvation but partners in nation-building,” he stressed.

Mr Edeh said the archdiocese had recorded tremendous growth in its core mission of spreading the gospel, with the establishment of 203 churches and societies across both urban and remote rural communities.

He said the church established nursery, primary, and secondary schools across the region, providing affordable and quality education rooted in Christian values.

The 50th anniversary will be celebrated between September 1 and September 5 with a tour of the five dioceses, a colloquium, and award ceremonies.
