Amnesty International has slammed the federal government over its inefficiency in guaranteeing the safety of Plateau State residents and communities, following repeated experiences of deadly attacks by gunmen.

Amnesty International, in a statement on Friday, condemned the apathetic disposition of the President Bola Tinubu’s administration, stating that the government keeps failing in its responsibility.

“Gunmen ambushed travellers returning home from Bokkos market and carried out slaughter with utter impunity. The patterns of recent deadly attacks on the rural areas of Plateau state, clearly show, the Nigerian authorities have left these communities at the mercy of rampaging gunmen,” said the rights organisation.

According to Amnesty International, 17 residents returning from Bokkos market were slaughtered around Chirang village, on Thursday, occurring ten days after no fewer than 27 people were gruesomely murdered in Riyom Local Government Area of the state.

“Almost 10 days after a deadly attack in which 27 people were slaughtered in Riyom LGA of Plateau state, another 17 people have been slaughtered yesterday around Chirang village in Bokkos Local Government Area (LGA),” the statement revealed.

The rights organisation called on all concerned authorities, including the federal and state government, as well as security operatives, to take proactive steps, rather than merely issuing media statements, in curbing the state insecurity.

“The Nigerian authorities are obliged under international human rights law, regional human rights treaties, and Nigeria’s own constitution to protect the human rights of all people without discrimination — and that includes the right to life,” it added.
