Tinubu confers Super Falcons players with OON; gifts them houses, cash

Nigeria won 3-2 to lift their 10th Women’s African Cup of Nations trophy.

President Bola Tinubu, on Monday, conferred the national honours of Officer of Order of Niger (OON) on Super Falcons players,  giving them three bedroom flats each and cash of $100,000.

Mr Tinubu announced this in his speech at the reception organised in honour of the Super Falcons team for winning the just condoned Women’s African Cup of Nations in Morocco.

“I have received this trophy on behalf of all Nigerians, and I say to you: thank you for the dedication, passion, and for reminding us of the strength of the Nigerian spirit. On behalf of a grateful nation, I hereby confer on the players and the 11-man technical team the national honour of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON),” Mr Tinubu said.

The president also announced three bedroom apartments, a cash gift of $100,000 for each of the 24 players and $50,000 each for all the members of the technical committee.

This comes as reward for Nigerian Super Falcons after they defeated Morocco’s Atlas Lionesses to win historic 10th Women’s African Cup of Nations at the Olympic Stadium in Rabat, Morocco on Saturday.

Host country, Morocco, took the lead in the 13th minute while the Super Falcons tried to find their rhythm in the game.

Morocco made it two in the 24th minute, leaving Nigeria two goals behind. However, the Super Falcons staged a fantastic comeback in the second half, equalising two goals before netting a winner 10 minutes to the end of the game.
