Three passengers sitting atop a bus were killed and five others injured on Tuesday after an electric wire electrocuted them in the western state of Rajasthan, officials said.

Officials said the passengers on the bus’ rooftop came into contact with the wire while it was playing on the road.

“Today, three people were killed and five others injured due to electrocution. The victims were atop a passenger bus that was returning from a fair at a temple in the neighbouring village,” V.K. Vermaan, a senior health official, said.

The accident took place in the Jaisalmer district, about 560 kilometres west of Jaipur, the capital city of Rajasthan.

Chief Minister of Rajasthan Ashok Gehlot expressed grief over losing lives in the mishap.

“The death of three people due to electrocution in a bus in Jaisalmer is extremely sad. My deepest condolences to the bereaved family,” Mr Gehlot wrote on social media.
