Tennis: Swiatek thumps Anisimova to clinch first-ever Wimbledon title

Poland’s Iga Swiatek dominated Amanda Anisimova from the United States 6-0, 6-0 in the Wimbledon women’s singles final on Saturday to clinch her sixth Grand Slam title.
Many expected the match to be a close game, especially after Anisimova, No 13, stunned world number one Aryna Sabalenka in the semifinals.
However, the 23-year-old’s nerves apparently overpowered her in what was her first-ever Grand Slam final, allowing Swiatek, the No. 8 seed, to turn the game into a one-sided one to clinch her maiden Wimbledon win in just 57 minutes.
The match is the second double bagel in a Grand Slam final in the Open Era, and the first since 1988, when Steffi Graf defeated Natasha Zvereva by the same scoreline to win the French Open.
Swiatek is now the only active WTA Tour player to hold Grand Slam titles on all three surfaces.
“It seems super surreal,” said Swiatek in her on-court speech. “I want to congratulate Amanda for an amazing two weeks. No matter what happened today, you should be proud of the work you’re doing. I hope we’re going to play many more finals here and in other tournaments. You have the game for that.”
She added, “Honestly, I didn’t even dream [of winning Wimbledon]. It was just way too far, you know. I feel like I’m already an experienced player after winning the Slams before, but I never really expected this one.
“I want to thank my team, because I feel like they believed in me more than I did. I want to thank my coach (Wim Fissette), who joined this year. Obviously, with ups and downs, but right now we showed everybody that it’s working.”
