Tenant arrested for beating up landlady over security bill

A 38-year-old tenant, Mary Pascal, was arraigned on Wednesday before a Kaduna Chief Magistrates’ court for allegedly beating her landlady over N3,000 security bill.
Ms Pascal is being tried for assault, to which she pleaded not guilty.
The prosecutor, Insp. Chidi Leo told the court that the defendant committed the offence on October 12, at about 4:00 p.m. at her residence.
Leo stated that the complainant asked the defendant to pay her security bill of N3,000 after failure to pay for three months.
The prosecutor said in the process, a fight ensued and the defendant hit the complainant with an iron bucket which caused her great pain and she was hospitalised.
The prosecutor said that the offence contravened Section 213 of the Penal Code of Kaduna State, 2017.
“The section stipulates four years jail term for the offence if found guilty.”
The magistrate, Ibrahim Emmanuel, granted the defendants bail in the sum of N100,000 with two sureties in like sum.
He said the sureties must be employed, producing evidence of tax payment to the Kaduna government and verifying their addresses.
The magistrate adjourned the case until November 9 for further hearing.
