Teenage housewife seeks dissolution of four-month-old marriage

A 19-year-old housewife, Sumayya Muhammad, has asked the Shari’a Court in Magajin Gari, Kaduna State, to dissolve her four-month-old marriage to Umar Imam through ‘Khul’.
Khul’ is a form of divorce in which the wife releases herself (from the marriage tie) by paying consideration to the husband.
Ms Muhammad, through her counsel I.T Sanusi, said she was ready to return the N100,000 bride price she received from her husband to redeem herself.
She added that Mr Umar owed her N10,000 and prayed the court to assist her in recovering the money.
“I am not pregnant and I don’t have a child. I am not interested in the marriage again,” she said.
On his part, the defendant said he loved his wife and prayed the court to give him time to try and reconcile with his wife.
He explained that he owed his wife N9,500, not N10,000, as she stated.
The judge, Rilwanu Kyaudai, adjourned the matter to October 7 for the couple to try and reconcile.
