Taipei welcomes U.S. commitment to Taiwan status amid China threats

Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesman, Jeff Liu, on Thursday said Taiwan welcomed the meeting of U.S. Joe Biden and China Xi Jinping.
Jeff noted that Mr Biden used his meeting with China’s leader Xi to publicly express the U.S. wish to maintain peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait.
After meeting with Mr Xi, Mr Biden had said the U.S. is opposed to any party unilaterally changing the status quo across the Taiwan Strait, and differences should be resolved peacefully.
Mr Biden also called on China to recognise Taiwan’s electoral process and restrain military actions around Taiwan.
Mr Jeff said there is international consensus on the importance of peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.
“As a responsible member of the international community, Taiwan will continue to actively strengthen its self-defence capabilities and deepen the Taiwan-U.S. security partnership,’’ Mr Jeff said.
Mr Jeff added that Taiwan would also continue to work closely with other like-minded countries to jointly safeguard stability across the Taiwan Strait.
