Suspected thugs kill one, injure others in Ebonyi community

Some suspected political thugs in Ekoli Community, Edda Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, on Wednesday, allegedly killed one Nnachi Uzor and injured others.
The suspects also destroyed property worth millions of naira in the area.
The state police spokesman, SP Joshua Ukandu, confirmed the incident in Abakiliki on Thursday.
Mr Ukandu said that operatives of the command had been mobilised to the community to quickly restore normalcy.
“Yes, we got information about gunshots in Ekoli Community and a police team has been mobilised to the area. Unfortunately, one person was killed in the shooting. We have also arrested two suspects and currently investigating the incident. Police officers have also been deployed to the area to ensure peace,” Mr Ukandu said.
A resident of the community, Chimaobi Ede, said that some group, popularly called “Catcham Boys,” killed Udu in his house on Wednesday at Ndenworo Village in the area.
“They came in a group and moved straight to Udu’s house and one of them shot him dead.
“His remains have been deposited at a morgue,” he said.
Also, a community leader, Etta Egor, condemned the killing, saying that the Catcham vigilance group had been causing trouble and unnecessary tension in Ekoli-Edda.
“The killing was bad. We call on the security agents to come to our assistance and ensure the perpetrators are brought to book,” Mr Egor said.
A former chairman of the local government and a former House of Assembly member, Dr Eni Uduma-Chima, and his younger brother, were sometime in June banished from the community for seven years by some community members.
Those who banished them alleged that the duo were promoting communal war in the area. (NAN)
