Suspected cultist remanded for pushing another into soakaway pit in Ebonyi

A chief magistrates’ court in Abakaliki on Monday remanded Chigozie Nwachukwu at a correctional centre in Ebonyi over alleged attempted murder and belonging to a cult group.
Mr Nwachukwu, 27, a suspected member of Barger Confraternity, is facing a three-count charge bordering on conspiracy, cultism and attempted murder.
The police prosecutor, Inspector Bassey Okon, told the court that the accused committed the offences on November 24, 2022, at Amachi-Unuhu, Abakaliki Local Government Area of the state.
Mr Okon told the court that Mr Nwachukwu and one other, now at large, attempted to murder Nwachukwu Lawrence by pushing him into a soakaway pit.
The prosecutor said the offence was punishable under section 516A (a) of the Criminal Code Cap 33 vol. 1, laws of Ebonyi, 2009.
The chief magistrate, Ojemba Isu-Oko, ordered that the accused be remanded at a correctional centre.
He adjourned the matter until June 23 for a hearing.
Mr Nwachukwu has yet to engage a counsel.
