Supreme Court’s ruling on LG autonomy, breakthrough for grassroots development: SDP

The Social Democratic Party has described the Supreme Court’s ruling in favour of financial autonomy for local governments as a milestone breakthrough towards grass-roots development in Nigeria.
The party’s National Chairman, Shehu Gabam, made this known in a statement, signed by his Media Assistant, Olugbenga George, in Abuja.
Mr Gabam said that the act was a welcome development, adding that local governments had been strengthened to perform better.
He said, “The decision marks a significant milestone in the nation’s journey towards true federalism and grass-roots development. The SDP believes that this ruling will empower local governments to deliver essential services and bring development closer to the people. We commend the Supreme Court for upholding the constitution and the Federal Government for pursuing this important initiative.”
Mr Gabam reiterated the SDP’s commitment to decentralisation, good governance, and the empowerment of local communities.
He said that the party would continue to advocate reforms that would promote democracy, accountability, and the well-being of all Nigerians.
He stated, “This ruling is a victory for the people, and we celebrate it as a step towards a more prosperous and inclusive Nigeria.’’
