Strike: FG calls organised labour to emergency meeting

The federal government has invited the organised labour to an emergency meeting today, October 1, at 2 p.m. at the State House in Abuja.
The meeting is planned to hold in the chief of staff’s conference room at the State House.
This move is in a bid to prevent the imminent nationwide indefinite strike billed for Tuesday, October 3, 2023, which was called by the Nigeria Labour Congress.
According to Punch, information about the emergency meeting was disclosed in a memorandum issued by the director of trade union services and industrial relations, Emmanuel Igbinosun, on behalf of the minister of labour, Simon Lalong, and addressed to the president of the Nigerian Labour Congress, Joe Ajaero.
This new meeting comes after that of September 29 was cancelled due to the absence of organised labour representatives.
It read, “Further to my earlier correspondence on the above subject, I once again bring greetings from the Honourable Minister of Labour and Employment.
“I am directed to invite the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) for a meeting with the Government on the above subject scheduled as follows; Date:- Sunday, October 1st, 2023; Time:- 2 p.m.; Venue:- Aso Villa Conference Room of the office of the Chief of Staff to Mr President.
“Please be assured as always of the kind regards of the Hon. Minister of Labour & Employment.”
Expected at the meeting are the national leadership of both the Nigeria Labour Congress and that of the Trade Union Congress.
Those to represent the government at the meeting include the chief of staff to the president, Honorable Femi Gbajabiamila; Mr Lalong; the minister of state for labour and employment, Honorable Nkiruka Onyejeocha, and other government officials.
