Sri Lanka declares emergency in drinking water sector

The Sri Lankan government has declared an emergency in the country’s drinking water sector, according to Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena.
The government has appointed an emergency action committee to implement an integrated programme to ensure the available water is used optimally, the prime minister said on Tuesday.
The committee comprises secretaries from the national water supply and drainage board, the department of irrigation, and other government agencies, Mr Gunawardena said.
Earlier, the board urged the public to save water as its capacity to supply purified drinking water has dropped to nine per cent.
