South Korea suspends local use of Chinese AI app DeepSeek over data concerns

The South Korean government announced on Monday that it had suspended the use of the Chinese Artificial Intelligence (AI) app DeepSeek in the country.
South Korea’s Personal Information Protection Commission (PIPC) justified its decision on the grounds of concerns about the app’s data collection practices.
The commission said it suspended DeepSeek’s local service at 6:00 p.m. (0900 GMT) on Saturday and would return online after “improvements and remedies’’ are made.
The remedies should be in line with the country’s personal information protection laws.
According to the PIPC, DeepSeek is actively cooperating with the data protection authority.
