Sokoto, UNDP plan 100 housing units for IDPs

The Sokoto government, in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), has finalised plans to construct 100 housing units for IDPs in Illela LGA.
This was announced on Thursday by Hadiza Galadima, the permanent secretary of the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Social Welfare, during the North-West Climate Change Peace Hubs Project Progress Update Meeting with stakeholders.
Ms Galadima said that the meeting provided a platform for the implementing partners to highlight the support from UNDP.
According to her, UNDP’s contributions have significantly improved the lives of many individuals and communities in Sokoto.
“The impact of UNDP’s assistance includes women’s empowerment programs, distribution of sewing machines to numerous beneficiaries, and training for youth in solar installation and other climate-resilient livelihoods,” she said.
Ms Galadima emphasised that UNDP’s initiatives have positively transformed the region and contributed to the state’s overall development.
She further said that Governor Ahmed Aliyu’s administration has continued exploring ways to alleviate the challenges of vulnerable groups.
Ms Galadima revealed that over N1 billion has been allocated to construct suitable accommodations for IDPs in Illela as part of the partnership with UNDP.
Ms Galadima commended UNDP’s efforts and assured the state government’s continued support for any organisation aiming to complement its efforts in improving the residents’ livelihoods, particularly the vulnerable.
With support from the Norwegian Embassy in Nigeria, the UNDP is working to eradicate poverty while promoting environmental sustainability.
