Shavkat Mirziyoyev elected for second term as Uzbekistan president

Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev has been elected for a second term with 80.12 per cent of the vote, the Uzbek Central Election Commissionsaid on Friday.
Mr Mirziyoyev was nominated by the ruling Uzbekistan Liberal Democratic Party for the election held last Sunday.
“In spite of the difficult situation due to the COVID-19 pandemic, more than 16 million or 80.4 per cent of voters freely expressed their will in the presidential elections.
“Their votes showed they voted for the candidate they considered worthy,” said the commission in a statement announcing the final results of the election.
During the campaign, the president promised more reforms to launch industrial projects, provide jobs and raise living standards in the populous Central Asian nation.
