Seven inmates escape after heavy rainfall destroys Ilesa prison wall

The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has commenced a manhunt for seven inmates who escaped from the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Ilesa, Osun, following damage to the facility’s perimeter wall caused by heavy rainfall.
In a statement on Tuesday in Abuja, the service’s spokesman, Abubakar Umar, said the NCoS’ controller general, Sylvester Nwakuche, has ordered an immediate investigation into the incident.
Mr Umar said the incident occurred at about 2:00 a.m. on Tuesday, leading to a breach in the prison’s security infrastructure.
He added that the service was collaborating with other security agencies and community leaders to recapture the fleeing inmates.
“The NCoS is committed to ensuring the escapees are returned to lawful custody. We are also working to reinforce the facility’s security to prevent further occurrences,” he said.
Mr Umar urged members of the public to provide credible information that could aid the recapture efforts.
He listed the NCoS response desk lines as 07087086005, 09060004598 and 08075050006, and encouraged anyone with useful tips to reach out or contact the nearest security agency.
