Senate to probe concession of airports by Buhari’s regime

The Godswill Akpabio-led Senate has condemned the concession of the Aminu Kano and Nnamdi Azikiwe international airports by former President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration to private operators.
During the plenary on Thursday, Kano south lawmaker and member of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Kawu Suleiman, sponsored a motion titled urgent need to reverse the concession of Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport, Kano.
Following the consideration of the motion, the Senate passed a resolution directing the Committee on Aviation, when formed, to investigate all airport concessions undertaken by the previous administration and make necessary recommendations to the Senate.
It also sought the federal government to evaluate the entire airport concession process and ensure a level playing field for all parties.
Days before the expiration of the Buhari regime, the federal government released the airports to Corporacion American Airport Consortium after it disclosed that the consortium had won the bid after a thorough evaluation process that began with the Request for Qualification (RFQ) published in both local and international media on August 16, 2021, followed by a rigorous evaluation of technical and financial bids, as well as a due diligence visit.
