Senate condemns gruesome murder of female corps member in Kaduna

The Senate on Wednesday condemned the gruesome murder of Chalya Silas, a female NYSC member serving in Kaduna State.
The Senate resolution followed the consideration and adoption of a motion at plenary on Wednesday.
The motion titled ”Gruesome murder of a Corps member, Chalya Silas, in Kaduna State” was sponsored by Senator Napoleon Bali (PDP-Plateau).
Mr Bali, in his lead debate, noted with grief the gruesome murder of the 24-year-old NYSC corps member from Langtang-North Local Government area of Plateau State on October 18.
“Aware that on October 18, Chalya, whose dad is late and is the only child of her mother, was attacked and fatally stabbed by hoodlums while engaging in her regular morning jog while serving in Kaduna State,” Mr Bali said.
The senator expressed concern that her untimely demise underscores the security challenges faced by Nigeria.
He said this serves as a strong reminder of the urgent need for improved security measures to safeguard the lives and aspirations of all citizens, including vulnerable individuals like the NYSC members, whose safety in recent times has been threatened by various security challenges.
The Senate, in its further resolution, having observed a minute silence in her honour, called on the federal government to work relentlessly to safeguard the lives of its citizens.
Deputy Senate President of the Barau Jibrin, who presided over plenary in his concluding remarks, said, “Let me thank Senator Napoleon Bali for bringing forward this motion because the murder of this young girl is something that is very sad—the gruesome murder of a girl of just 24 years.
“We should not allow this kind of murder to continue happening in this country.
“It is, therefore, important that all our security agencies play the roles they need to play to prevent this kind of murder from occurring on our land in the future,” Mr Jibrin said.
