SDP presidential candidate promises to focus on public welfare

Social Democratic Party presidential candidate Adewole Adebayo has promised to redirect trillions of naira from lavish political lifestyles to public education, healthcare, and infrastructure.
Mark Adebayo, spokesman for the Adebayo-Bugaje presidential campaign, said this in a statement issued on Tuesday.
Mr Adebayo said an SDP-led administration would implement a strict fiscal plan to eradicate the system in which ordinary citizens subsidise public officials.
He stressed that the current economic hardships stemmed from a ruling class that prioritised institutionalised waste over human development.
”We will stop Nigerians from subsidising the lavish lifestyles of politicians,” Mr Adebayo stated.
Mr Adebayo criticised successive budgets for funnelled public capital into executive comforts while families coped with inflation and crumbling social services.
“Successive budgets have systematically funnelled enormous public capital into executive comforts while millions of families deal with inflation, fuel duty increases, and crumbling social services,” he said.
According to him, fiscal estimates and civil society tracking reports show the cost of political opulence in Nigeria ran into multiple trillions of Naira annually.
Mr Adebayo said that federal reviews showed that nearly N1 trillion is routinely spent on luxury utility vehicles, presidential fleet upgrades, and state house renovations.
He added that mid-2026 budget data revealed that 33 state governments spent over N410 billion on governors’ offices and executive travel in just six months.
The presidential candidate said that this points to an annual state-level lifestyle drain exceeding N1 trillion.
Mr Adebayo condemned these expenditures, including single-agency procurements exceeding N10 billion for armoured vehicles.
He said that four years was sufficient for a transparent leader to restructure public finances and eliminate unconstitutional vehicle allowances.
Mr Adebayo urged Nigerians to reject leaders who treated public resources as personal accounts.
He reaffirmed the party’s dedication to public welfare and domestic production.
