The police have arraigned a 58-year-old female scavenger, Rose Nwako, in a Life Camp Chief Magistrates’ Court, Abuja, for allegedly pouring hot water on her neighbour.

The police charged Ms Nwako, who resides at Karmo Market, Abuja, with voluntarily causing grievous hurt by dangerous means and criminal intimidation.

The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The prosecutor, Charity Nwachukwu, told the court that the complainant, John Ajure, of behind Assemblies of God Church, Karmo, reported the matter at the Karmo Police Station on June 9.

Ms Nwachukwu said that on the same day, the complainant and the defendant had a little misunderstanding, and Ms Nwako dishonestly threatened to kill him without provocation.

Ms Nwachukwu told the court that the defendant intentionally boiled hot water and violently poured the hot water all over the complainant’s body.

She told the court that because of the hot water, the complainant sustained serious injury on his face and his body.

The prosecutor said that during police investigation and interrogation, the defendant made a confessional statement and threatened to kill the complainant after he recovered from the burn.

The offence contravenes Sections 248 and 397 of the penal code.

The Chief Magistrate, Musa Jobbo, admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N200,000 and two sureties in like sum.

Mr Jobbo ordered that the sureties must produce reliable means of identification and must reside within the jurisdiction of the court.

He, however, adjourned the matter until July 3 for hearing.
