Sanusi’s Reinstatement: Court sets aside law removing Bayero as Emir of Kano

The Kano Division of the Federal High Court has overturned the law promulgated by the state government to repeal the Emirates Council Repeal Law 2024.
In his ruling on Thursday, Justice Muhammad Liman ordered that the status quo be maintained while expressing dissatisfaction that the defendants ignored the court’s interim order and implemented the law.
However, the judge, who held that he would use his coercive powers to ensure his order was complied with, handed the case over to Justice Simon Amobeda for continuation due to his elevation to the Court of Appeal.
The Kano House of Assembly had abrogated the law promulgated by ex-Governor Abdullahi Ganduje, which ousted Muhammad’s Sanusi II, the 14th Emir of Kano, and created four emirates in 2020.
However, Governor Abba Yusuf approved the repeal of the law and the new law reinstated Mr Sanusi. The incumbent governor dethroned Aminu Ado Bayero as Emir of Kano and dismantled the four emirates created by Mr Ganduje (Bichi, Rano Karaye and Gaya).
Following this, a kingmaker in the former Kano emirate, Aminu Babba Danagundi, Sarkin Dawaki Babba, through his counsel, Chikaosolu Ojukwu, asked the court to declare the law null and void.
