Russian parliament approves annexation of four Ukrainian regions

The upper house of the Russian parliament has ratified Moscow’s annexation of the Ukrainian regions of Luhansk, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhya and Kherson.
The move has flouted international law and has led to universal condemnation from Western countries.
State news agency TASS reported that the Federation Council voted unanimously to pass a bill incorporating the regions into the Russian Federation.
President Vladimir Putin signed the treaties of accession on Friday, and the lower house approved it on Monday. Once Mr Putin signs the annexation bill into law, it will come into force.
The Duma has already passed various laws covering the Ukrainian territories’ full integration into Russia, providing a transitional period until 2026.
