Republican lawmaker proposes constitutional amendment to give Trump third term

Republican congressman Andy Ogles has introduced a resolution before the Congress seeking a constitutional amendment to allow his ally and U.S. President Donald Trump to serve a third term in office.
Mr Ogles is pushing to amend the 22nd Amendment, the law that prevents anybody from serving more than two terms, which was passed in 1947 and ratified in 1951 after Franklin Roosevelt was elected president for the fourth term.
In the resolution, Mr Olges seeks for a new amendment to the Constitution that would give a president three terms in office, but no more than two consecutive four-year stints, paving the legal path for Mr Trump to contest another presidential election.
Mr Trump himself floated the idea of a third term presidency during a meeting with House Republican lawmakers days after he was elected president for the second time in November.
Mr Trump admitted it would be impossible for him to run again unless Republicans were so impressed with his leadership that they’d figure something else out — Mr Ogles has initiated the first step of the long process.
Defending the decision, Mr Ogles said that Mr Trump “has proven himself to be the only figure in modern history capable of reversing our nation’s decay and restoring America to greatness, and he must be given the time necessary to accomplish that goal.”
“To that end, I am proposing an amendment to the Constitution to revise the limitations imposed by the 22nd Amendment on presidential terms,” Mr Ogles said.
He added, “This amendment would allow President Trump to serve three terms, ensuring that we can sustain the bold leadership our nation so desperately needs.”
