Reps wants investigation into oil leak in Southern Ijaw

The House of Representatives has called on companies operating oil facilities in the coastal area of Southern Ijaw to end persistent oil leak from their facilities.
This followed the adoption of a motion by Rodney Ambaiowei (PDP-Bayelsa) during plenary in Abuja on Tuesday.
Presenting the motion, Ambaiowei, who represents Southern Ijaw federal constituency, said the volume of oil leak from the facilities was enormous, saying it could lead to water pollution.
He said the slow response of the companies to oil spillage could lead to unrest in the area.
The parliament adopted the motion and mandated its Committee on Petroleum (Upstream) to work with relevant government ministries, departments and agencies to carry out an investigation on the issue and to report back for further legislative action.
