Rema wins big at The Headies 2023; Burna Boy, Odumodublvck, Asake, others expand accolades

Nigerian singers, Rema, Burna Boy and Odumodublvck are among the top winners at The Headies 2023 which was held on Sunday night.
The 16th edition of the prestigious award was held at the Cobb Energy Centre in Atlanta and was hosted by Nigerian actress Osas Ighodaro and American TV presenter Terrence J.
The event, “Celebrating African Renaissance”, recognised the best artists within a particular year in view and saw Rema going home as the biggest winner in three highly coveted categories.
He won “Best Male Artiste of the Year,” “Digital Artiste of the Year,” and “African Artiste of the Year.”
On the other hand, self-proclaimed “African Giant” Burna Boy also won big. His hit single, “Last Last” ironically won “Afrobeats Single of the Year,” a genre he categorically downplayed recently, and “Song of the Year.” Burna Boy had only last month said Afrobeats lacked substance and cast himself as singing a different genre, his so-called Afrofusion, which has earned him widespread ridicule among music listeners.
Fast-rising rapper, Odumodublvck, also won the highly contended “Rookie of the Year” and “Best Rap Single” for his chart-topping single “Declan Rice,” a track he named after Arsenal’s midfielder and former Westham Player.
Victony also bagged a victory at the event as his track with producer Tempoe won “Headies Viewers Choice” and “Best Recording of the Year.”
Asake, on the other hand, also won in two special categories, “Next Rated” and “Album of the Year” for his project “Mr. Money with the Vibe.”
This year, multiple award-winning singer, Davido did not win in any category he was nominated in.
Special recognition was given to the late Sound Sultan for his contributions to the Nigerian music industry.
The night was serenaded with sleazing performances from some of the finest artists in the industry, including, Wande Coal, Young Jonn, Seyi Vibez, and Asake, among others.
