Promoter urges FG to strengthen local boxing

The promoters said there are numerous boxing talents across the nation but not enough promoters and sponsors.

The Chief Executive Officer of One 2 Sports Promotions, Ifeanyi Edembe, has called on the Federal Government to create a platform for boxing to thrive in Nigeria.

Mr Edembe, who sponsored the just-concluded boxing event tagged “Judgement Day” in Lagos, said during an interview that talents abound who are potential world champions.

According to him, as he is debuting in boxing promotion, he is happy about the opportunity and confident in no time to organise an international world title bout.

“There are numerous talents across the nation but not enough promoters and sponsors to tap into the opportunity to discover young boxers that can be developed and nurtured. The government has to come in to create that enabling platform for the sport to stage world-class events and international championships.

“This is, however, the level I am interested in to invest my hard earned funds in and take boxing to greater heights as a promoter in Nigeria,” Mr Edemba said.

About seven titled bouts featured at the maiden edition of One 2 Sports boxing event on Saturday at the Indoor Sports Hall of the National Stadium, Lagos.

The main event had Monyashau “Water” Muritador go pound for pound with Godwin Ambrose in a 10 rounds National Cruiserweight vacant title bout.

The fight went the way of Muritador as he out-punched Ambrose from the beginning of the fight down to the final round to score a unanimous decision victory at the end of the fight.

The three judges that scored the fight recorded a 93-97, 98-92 and 90-100 in favour of Muritador to win the national cruiserweight championship belt.

The centre referee would stop the fight to record a technical knockout victory for Mr Lateef at the second round having discovered a deep cut in the ball socket of Mr Ekpenyong.
