POLL: 83 per cent of Nigerians distrust Tinubu, 82 per cent lack faith in National Assembly, 79 per cent suspicious of Kekere-Ekun-led judiciary

The majority of Nigerians have lost whatever shred of confidence they might have had in President Bola Tinubu’s administration to deliver on its mandate and rescue the nation from extreme poverty, insecurity, and a cost-of-living crisis — challenges that predated his presidency but have now spiralled out of control under his two-year governance.
According to a Nigeria Social Cohesion Survey 2025 report conducted by the Africa Polling Institute (API), a staggering 83 per cent of Nigerians said they have lost faith in Mr Tinubu, who made several promises during his campaign and vowed to restore the hopes dashed by ex-President Muhammadu Buhari through his so-called “Renewed Hope Agenda.”
That agenda appears to have failed woefully, based on the 83 per cent who have become eager to see his administration come to an end and are already rallying support for a new African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition to unseat him come 2027.
While $1 neared N1,000 under Mr Buhari in 2023, it traded for N1,600 under Mr Tinubu as of Monday afternoon. The prices of food have also tripled under the former Lagos governor, while violent attacks by herdsmen and terrorists continue unabated. Last month, suspected Fulani herders attacked farmers and their children in an overnight attack, locking them in their homes before setting their homes ablaze.
The poll showed that a similar 82 per cent of Nigerians have little to no expectations from the National Assembly, led by Godswill Akpabio from Akwa Ibom, who is embroiled in a sexual assault scandal, and the House of Representatives under Speaker Tajudeen Abbas.
Edo Senator Neda Imasuen, chair of the Senate Ethics Committee, was disbarred by the New York State Supreme Court after he absconded with client Daphne Shyfield’s funds.
Similarly, a former speaker and Mr Tinubu’s chief of staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, was stripped of his law licence in the U.S. after duping his client of several thousands of dollars. He admitted to stealing $25,000 of a client’s funds.
Per the Nigeria Social Cohesion Survey 2025 report, 79 per cent of Nigerians said they lacked faith in the nation’s judiciary to deliver justice and rid the country of criminals, given that Chief Justice of Nigeria Kudirat Kekere-Ekun and her predecessor, Kayode Ariwoola, have been dogged by corruption allegations in the past.
Ms Kekere-Ekun was denied a U.S. visa over a controversial election judgment that crowned APC’s Hope Uzodimma the winner of the 2019 Imo governorship election, even though the electoral commission, INEC, ranked him fourth in the polls.
Mr Tinubu’s weak economic polices and the tainted pasts of some of his cabinet members have so far shattered hopes that his administration can deliver on the numerous promises made during his campaign.
