The Ekiti State Police Command has vowed to apprehend hoodlums who invaded the state secretariat of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Ado-Ekiti.

The command’s spokesman, SP Sunday Abutu, made the promise while speaking with journalists in Ado-Ekiti on Tuesday.

Hoodlums on Monday night invaded the secretariat and destroyed chairs, tables, canopies, musical instruments, and motorbikes, among other things, before setting the building located on Basiri/Ilesa Road ablaze.

The incident happened when the ADC was preparing for the inauguration of its state executives scheduled for Tuesday, October 21.

Mr Abutu disclosed that the commissioner of police had ordered an investigation into the incident with a view to bringing the perpetrators to book.

The ADC national secretary and former governor of Osun, Rauf Aregbesola, who arrived in Ado-Ekiti after the incident, described the attack as undemocratic.

Mr Aregbesola said it was unfortunate and shameful that products of the democratic process can exhibit such a ‘despicable act in the name of politics.’

He called on security agencies to safeguard lives and property in the state.

“When you see undemocratic people undermining democratic processes the way we have witnessed here, it is a terrible decline to racism,” he stated.

The former minister of interior pointed out that the beauty of democracy is the freedom to associate and participate in all its activities and festivals, such as open meetings, rallies, and campaigns.

Mr Aregbesola called on Nigerians and the security agencies to rise up to exterminate undemocratic acts in Nigeria’s polity.

An affirmation was later held for the party’s state executives, while the state chairman, Ilesanmi Omolayo, inaugurated other executives.

Speaking after the inauguration, the chairman of ADC in the state called on party members to stand firm.

Party chieftains present include former deputy governor of Ekiti, Olusola Eleka, and former speaker, Gboyega Aribisogun.
