Police to arrest, prosecute FCT motorists without number plates
The Commissioner of Police (CP) in charge of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Ahmed Sanusi, has ordered immediate arrest and prosecution of motorists dribinh vehicles without number plates and tinted permit.
The FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, said this in a statement on Sunday in Abuja.
The CP warned motorists and vehicle owners against the use of vehicles without valid licence plates, tinted permits, and vehicles with concealed, defaced or deliberately faded plate numbers.
He said particular attention would be on persons driving SUVs except top government officials.
Mr Sanusi also warned against the use of fake diplomatic plate numbers or numbers by unauthorised persons within the FCT.
The CP said the warning followed the proliferation of such vehicles, observed to be used by criminals to evade detection, identification and arrest during and after the commission of offences.
“The FCT is a peculiar environment where the use of such vehicles poses significant security concerns, as it may hinder effective identification and tracking by law enforcement agencies.
“Motorists found operating such vehicles in violation of the law will be arrested, and prosecuted immediately in accordance with the law,” he said.
Mr Sanusi said police officers across the FCT had been directed to intensify enforcement and ensure strict compliance with extant laws governing vehicle identification and the use of tinted glasses.
He said the offficers had also been directed to conduct the operations professionally and refrain from using the exercise as a means of extortion.
The CP urged residents to support police operations, adding that “security is a collective responsibility.”
He advised the public to report suspicious vehicles or activities to the nearest police station or through the command’s emergency numbers on 08032003913, 08028940883.
