Police arraign woman over alleged N1.6 million fraud

A 36-year-old woman, Anthonia Nwojiji, was on Thursday arraigned before an Abakaliki Chief Magistrates’ Court for allegedly obtaining the sum of N1,640,000 from one Moses Okubo under false pretence.
Ms Nwojiji is being charged with criminal conspiracy and theft, to which she, however, pleaded not guilty.
The Prosecuting Counsel, Insp Bassey Okon, told the court that the defendant committed the offences on April 8 at Ndiebor Ishioli, Amaechi in Abakaliki Local Government Area of Ebonyi.
Mr Okon added that the defendant obtained the sum of N1,640,000 from the complainant under false pretence, with intent to defraud him.
The offences, according to him, are punishable under Section 419 of the Criminal Code, Cap. 33, Vol. I, Law of Ebonyi State of Nigeria, 2009.
Counsel to the defendant, Anne Oluchukwu, made an application for bail for the defendant.
The Chief Magistrate, Ojemba Isu-Oko, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N2 million, with a surety in like sum.
Ms Isi-Oko adjourned the matter till June 28 for further hearing.
