The Plateau Youth Council, the umbrella body for all youths in the state, has called on PLASIEC to conduct credible LG elections.

PYC chairman Panan Gongden made the call on Monday when he visited PLASIEC’s boss, Planji Cishak, in Jos.

Mr Gongden, who thanked PLASIEC for the adequate preparation so far, said that the October 9 local government polls must not truncate the current fragile peace.

He promised to sensitise youths across the 17 local government areas to be peaceful before, during and after the election.

”The youths are the engine room of good governance and good governance begins with free and fair elections. This is why we are calling on PLASIEC to ensure that the forthcoming local government election is credible and peaceful.

”However, we will sensitise the youths on the dangers of electoral violence and malpractices to create an enabling environment for a credible and peaceful election,” he said.

Mr Cishak assured Plateau residents that the forthcoming polls would not be business as usual.

“We will conduct not just a free, fair election, but one that the votes of Plateau residents will count,” Mr Cishak stated.

Mr Cishak said that the commission would conduct an election in tandem with global standards.
